Making Tacos Even More Delish: DIY Taco Seasoning Blend

“If only it could be Taco Tuesday every day!” – so says Taco Tuesday Man of LEGO Movie fame.
And as such, with a 5-year-old LEGO-obsessed boy in my household, tacos are a current mainstay.   As a family that likes to eat clean, I’m actually okay with tacos.  We get great handmade (non-GMO, preservative free) corn tortillas from a local restaurant, and load up with veggies, cheese, homemade salsa and other healthy ingredients.

But, what about the store-bought taco spice packets?  I could faint.  What is silicon dioxide, anyway?  Ethoxyquin?  Surely, these are things found in my mechanic’s shop, rather than in my food?!  Well – as luck would have it, it’s just as easy to make your own taco seasoning blend.  You can make it in bulk for your family and it’s far fresher and tastier than any darn blend you’ll get from those store bought brands.  Remember – in addition to the nasties added to the store brand blends, fillers, including gluten, often lurk.

By blending your own taco spice blend, you can adjust the spice levels to suit your family’s palate and you can feel good, knowing you’re eating clean and healthy.  Be sure to buy your spices from a reputable spice purveyor to ensure they are indeed pure, fresh and preservative free.

Oh yes – I’d be remiss to not mention that the recipe I’m going to leave you with, makes a substantial amount of spice, and it works out to be less expensive than those packages at the supermarket.  Be sure to store any of your handmade spice blends in an opaque, airtight container.  Spices are mostly affected by moisture, light and air.  Do not store near a heat source or in the freezer.

Without further ado, from our Taco Tuesday Man household to yours, our family’s favorite, clean taco seasoning blend:

Clean Taco Seasoning Blend

*Makes the equivalent of about 12 store packets (1 to 1½ Tbsp per pound of meat)
Recipe by Susan Broughton

  • 6 tbsps. ancho chilli powder (ancho is not hot; it lends a deep, rich flavour to the blend)
  • 1½ tsp. garlic powder
  • 1½ tsp. onion powder
  • 1½ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1½ tsp. dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp. smoked paprika
  • 3 tbsp. ground cumin
  • 2 tbsp. pure sea salt
  • 1 Tbsp. cracked black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder (this adds a unique depth of flavor)

Directions:  Thoroughly combine all ingredients and store in an opaque, air tight container.  Use 1 to 1½ tablespoon of the seasoning blend per pound of ground beef.  Serve on clean tortilla shells.  Enjoy!
